Leopold Zechner

Leopold Zechner (born June 26, 1884 in Vienna ; † December 6, 1968 there ) was an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ) and President of the Vienna City School Council .

Life

Zechner attended the teacher training college and had been an elementary and community school teacher since 1903. After studying at the University of Vienna between 1919 and 1925, he was granted the license to teach history and geography in secondary schools. In 1930 he became a district school inspector in Floridsdorf , but was forced to retire in 1934 for political reasons.

After the Second World War, Zechner was a member of the National Council from 1945 to 1956 and executive president of the city school council from 1945 to 1960. He was also President of the League for Human Rights (1949) and President of the Association of Viennese People's Education (1951). Zechner was a co-founder of the Institute for Science and Art . His services to the rebuilding of popular education and the school system after the war were honored with the award of the City of Vienna Prize for Popular Education in 1960. In 1954 he became a citizen of the city of Vienna .

His daughter Ingrid Leodolter was the Federal Ministry for Health and Environmental Protection from 1971 to 1979 .

After his death he was buried in the Hietzinger Friedhof in an honorary grave (group 44, number 43). In 2002 the Leopold-Zechner-Platz in Vienna- Hietzing was named after him.
