Friedrich of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Norburg

Friedrich von Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Norburg (born November 26, 1581 in Sønderborg , † July 22, 1658 in Nordborg (Norburg)) was Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Norburg .

Life

Friedrich was the third youngest son of Johann von Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg (1545-1622). He spent most of his life at the courts of Copenhagen and Dresden. When his father divided his divided duchy in his will in 1622 among his surviving six sons, Friedrich initially got nothing. In 1624, however, his brother Johann Adolf died without any descendants and the title and duchy passed to Friedrich. The already small duchy on the northern half of the island of Alsen was significantly smaller than in 1622 because Johann Adolf had sold almost half of his land with three goods to his brother Alexander , who had inherited the southern half of the island with Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg. Despite the support of his other brothers and the Danish king, Friedrich only got one court back. Almost all of his reign was marked by wars. In 1657 the duchy was sacked by Swedish troops.

Marriages and offspring

It was only as a duke that Friedrich could go looking for a bride. On August 1, 1627 he married Juliane (* December 26, 1589; † December 1, 1630), daughter of Franz II. Von Sachsen-Lauenburg . The couple had a son, Johann Bogislaw .

After the death of his first wife, Friedrich married Eleonore von Anhalt-Zerbst on February 5, 1632 (born November 10, 1608 in Zerbst; † November 2, 1680 in Osterholm), daughter of Rudolf von Anhalt-Zerbst . The couple had the following children:

  • Elisabeth Juliane (* May 24, 1633; † February 4, 1704 in Wolfenbüttel) ⚭ August 17, 1656 Anton Ulrich von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel (1633–1714)
  • Dorothea Hedwig (born April 18, 1636 in Norburg; † September 23, 1692 in Gandersheim), abbess of the Gandersheim monastery (1665-78) - she converted to Catholicism and married on June 7, 1678 Christoph von Rantzau -Hohenfeld.
  • Christian August (April 30, 1639 - January 1687), traveler and naval officer in the British Navy
  • Luise Amöne (born January 15, 1642; † June 4, 1685) ⚭ August 28, 1665 Johann Friedrich von Hohenlohe-Neuenstein-Öhringen (1617–1702)
  • Rudolf Friedrich (September 27, 1645; † November 14, 1688) Dutch military ⚭ June 10, 1680 Bibiane von Promnitz (* August 8, 1649; † August 19, 1685)

After Friedrich's death in 1658, his eldest son took over the title and the heavily indebted duchy.
