Nordborg Castle on Alsen gave its name to the Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Norburg line

The partial duchy of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Norburg existed from 1622 to 1729. It was created by dividing the Duchy of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg . The Norburg area (also: Nordborg or Nordburg ) is located on the island of Alsen .

history

In 1564 the Danish King Friedrich II formed a new duchy for his younger brother Johann from areas in the duchies of Schleswig and Holstein : Sonderburg , Norburg , Arrö , Plön and Ahrensbök . However, since Alsen was part of the personal property of the king's widow, Johann only came into possession of the island around 1580. When he died in 1622, the land was divided among his sons, who, like their father, became the so-called separated masters . The northern part of Alsen first came to Johann Adolf , who thus became the first Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Norburg. After his early death, the area fell to his brother Friedrich. The country was devastated in the second Northern War . In 1665 the castle burned down. This was followed by national bankruptcy in 1669 and the Danish king took over the country.

After the death of Johann Bogislaw , the deposed last duke of the older line, in 1679 the Norburg property came to the Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Plön line and passed as heir to the second-born son of Plön Duke Joachim Ernst , August von Schleswig-Holstein Norburg-Plön . Since the Plön line had no heirs at the beginning of the 18th century, Duke August's first son, Joachim Friedrich , was appointed the new Duke over both lords - Plön and Norburg. After the death of Duke Joachim Friedrich, the son of his late brother Christian Karls, Friedrich Karl - who came from a morganatic marriage - was appointed the new Duke of Plön and Norburg in 1722. He was only able to take over the Duchy of Plön in 1729 because of an inheritance dispute with the Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Plön-Rethwisch line . Formally the last Duke of Norburg, he now renounced the property in favor of the Danish king, who took over all of his debts. This finally ended the Norburg line.
