Nordborg ( German : Norburg ; Sønderjysk or Alsisk : Nöboe ) is a northerly and after Sønderborg the second largest city on the southern Danish island of Als ( German  Alsen ).

Nordborg was originally its own parish ( Nordborg Sogn ) in the Harde Als Nørre Herred , which initially belonged to its own Nordborg office , the remainder of which remained in the Duchy of Schleswig after the Peace of Vienna in 1864 in the then Sønderborg office . After the municipal reform on April 1, 1970 , Nordborg was the administrative seat of its own municipality Nordborg Kommune in what was then Sønderjyllands Amt , which was merged into the “new” Sønderborg Municipality in the Syddanmark region as part of the municipal reform on January 1, 2007 . In addition to its own parish, Nordborg now also extends to the area of ​​the parishes Havnbjerg Sogn and, to a small extent, Oksbøl Sogn .

history

Nordborg was officially mentioned for the first time in 1600. Between 1622 and 1730 it was an independent duchy . In 1792 over 90 buildings burned down in Nordborg, and there are still a few houses that were rebuilt the following year. The oldest surviving farm in Als - Lundsbjerggård - is located in Holm on the northern tip of the island and dates back to the 18th century. It is the only remaining square courtyard.

Another large farm complex a few kilometers to the southeast is Alsingergården, built in 1863. This is a so-called Bol, a name for larger courtyards. The thatched mill of Havnbjerg was built. 1835 Not far away is the last Danish mill of the Galerie Holländer type in Elstrup . It has been out of service since 1970.

From 1970 to the end of 2006, Nordborg was the official seat of the Nordborg Municipality of the same name (with the municipalities of Eken, Hagenberg, Oxbüll, Schwenstrup), through a municipal reform in early 2007 it now belongs to the Sønderborg Municipality . The city name is a reference to this in a natural area next to the lake Nordborg lake located Nordborg Castle . The original castle was built in 1159 by Svend III. Grathe erected as protection against the turns coming from Rügen. The castle complex is one of the oldest in Denmark, but today's castle was rebuilt in 1786.

In 1933 Mads Clausen founded his company Danfoss in Elsmark , a few kilometers from Nordborg. This quickly had an impact on urban development. During the first 15 years it was still possible to meet the needs of workers from the local area, but as the company expanded from 1950 onwards, many people immigrated to the area. Almost every citizen of Nordborg is now directly or indirectly involved with Danfoss. Today it is one of the largest industrial companies in Denmark. In addition to a museum , the Danfoss Museum & Teknorama , there has been a natural science adventure park , the Danfoss Universe, since 2006 .

From July 1, 1898 to February 6, 1933, the city was the terminus of a narrow-gauge line of the Amtsbanerne på Als , which was built as a circular path on Als , an own operation of the former Sonderburg district in North Schleswig .

An association has existed since 2003 that wants to rebuild part of the route as a museum railway. The first trip on a small stretch of road took place on August 28, 2016.
