Joachim Friedrich von Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Plön (born May 9, 1668 in Magdeburg ; † January 25, 1722 in Plön ), also Joachim Friedrich of Schleswig-Holstein-Plön , was the third Duke of the Duchy of Schleswig-Holstein-Plön , which emerged from a division of the Duchy of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg .

Life

It originally came from an insignificant branch line from Plön, the Schleswig-Holstein-Norborg line with its seat at Nordborg Castle on Alsen , which arose from the division of the inheritance of the first Duke of Plön, Joachim Ernst, in 1671. He was the eldest son of August von Schleswig-Holstein-Norburg-Plön (1635–1699) and his wife Elisabeth Charlotte von Anhalt-Harzgerode (1647–1723).

After the reigning Duke of Plön, Hans Adolf, died in 1704 and his son, Adolf August, had died of an " debilitating " illness a few days before his father , the male line of the Plön line was only extended to the grandson of Hans Adolf and son of Adolf August, Leopold August ( 1702-1706), represented. He died at the age of four, which means that the right to the Plön inheritance passed to Joachim Friedrich. Joachim Friedrich himself had no male heir and died in 1722, heavily in debt. The Plön Castle , the main residence of the Plön dukes, then stood empty for seven years and some of the building's furnishings were sold. The management of the property was carried out by the Danish royal family at this time.

After the Duke's death, the son of his brother Christian Karls, Friedrich Karl - who, according to Joachim Friedrich, came from a morganatic marriage - was chosen as the new and last Duke of Plön.

family

Joachim Friedrich was married twice. His first wife, Magdalene Juliane von Zweibrücken-Birkenfeld , was a daughter of Johann Karl von Pfalz-Gelnhausen (1686–1720). He married her in 1704 after becoming Duke of Plön. He had the following children with her:

⚭ 1735 Count Albrecht Ludwig Friedrich von Hohenlohe-Weikersheim (1716–1744)
⚭ 1749 Prince Ludwig Friedrich of Saxony-Hildburghausen .

On February 17, 1721 Joachim Friedrich married his second wife, Juliane Luise von Ostfriesland (1698–1740), a daughter of Christian Eberhard Cirksenas . On May 28, 1722, she suffered a miscarriage.
