Johann (also Hans ) Adolf von Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Plön (born April 8, 1634 in Ahrensbök ; † July 2, 1704 in Ruhleben ) was the second Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Plön , resulting from a division of the duchy Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg emerged. As a military man, he served in the rank of general for various territories.

Life

Johann Adolf was the eldest son of the first Duke of Plön, Joachim Ernst . From 1645 to 1650 he made a grand tour of European countries with his one year younger brother August , which took him to England and France , among others . In 1671 he took over the inheritance of his father as the ruling duke. On October 25, 1671 he was awarded the highest Danish order of the Elephant Order (124th bearer).

In 1684 he had the first hunting lodge built in Traventhal , in 1685 the Johanniskirche and in 1690 the town church in Plön.

Hans Adolf served in various armies in the early modern period and took part in several major wars of his era, including the Turkish Wars , and largely left the administration of his duchy to his mother and wife during these times. In 1664 he became Imperial General Field Sergeant , 1668 Lieutenant Field Marshal and 1676 Field Marshal . In 1674 he moved for a short time as field marshal in the Brunswick-Lüneburg principality of Calenberg . In 1676 he became a Danish field marshal. Finally, from 1693, he served as field marshal for the Dutch Republic of the Seven United Provinces .

During his reign, the Peace of Traventhal , a partial event of the Great Northern War , was concluded on the hunting seat in Traventhal, which belonged to the duchy .

Duke Hans Adolf von Plön is the son-in-law of Rudolph August von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel. Emperor Leopold I commissioned Hans Adolf as a close relative to separate Duke Rudolph August from his brother Anton Ulrich of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel and instructed him to deliver the mandate for the separation. Johann Adolf was married to Dorothea von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel , a daughter of Rudolf August von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel . Children:

  • their son, Leopold August (1702–1706), died in childhood

Duke Johann Adolf died in 1704, a few days after his son Adolf August died of an " debilitating " illness. Since Adolf August's son and Johann Adolf's grandson Leopold August died in 1706 in childhood, the inheritance went to Johann Adolf's nephew, Joachim Friedrich from the Schleswig-Holstein-Nordborg line .
