Evarcha falcata is a spider from the family of jumping spiders .

features

Evarcha falcata is a medium-sized jumping spider. The females grow to 6 to 8 mm, the males reach 5 mm.

The upper side of the front body ( prosoma ) of the male is light brown in the front half and dark brown to black in the rear half. There are broad, light beige to white stripes behind the front eyes and on the side of the prosoma. The back of the body ( opisthosoma ) is colored light brown in the middle, this area is bordered by a black and white stripe. Sometimes there are light oblique spots on the back of the abdomen. The frontal eye area is lightly haired. The pedipalps are covered with long, light hair.

The female, on the other hand, is clearly differently colored ( sexual dimorphism ). The front and back of the body are uniformly brown in color, light stripes and spots are missing. On the opisthosoma there is sometimes an indistinct drawing of oblique spots, similar to Evarcha arcuata .

distribution and habitat

Evarcha falcata is common throughout the Palearctic . The species prefers drier locations, especially sunny forest edges with dense vegetation.

Evarcha falcata is not uncommon in suitable habitats; the species is not endangered in Central Europe.

Way of life

Male waiting for prey

This spider mostly lives in low layers of vegetation. It roams the herb layer and finds its prey there.

When mating, the male climbs upside down on the female and can be carried around by the female for a long time. For the actual copulation, the male lets himself down to the side and inserts a pedipalp into the epigyne .
