Evarcha arcuata is a spider from the family of the jumping spiders (Salticidae).
features
The species is one of the medium-sized jumping spiders. Males have a body length of 5 to 6 mm, females reach 6 to 8 mm. Like many jumping spiders, the species shows a clear sexual dimorphism in terms of color and drawing. The male is largely monochrome dark brown to black and has a brownish coppery sheen. It shows a very distinctive facial drawing; the area around the eyes is hairy white, and in addition there are two broad, parallel, white transverse bands under the eyes. The lower legs of the first two pairs of legs are also hairy white on the front.
The front body ( prosoma ) of the females is brownish on top and whitish hairy on the sides. The back of the body ( opisthosoma ) is speckled brownish-white and additionally shows paired, often light-edged, black oblique spots.
distribution and habitat
Evarcha arcuata inhabits large parts of the Palearctic from Great Britain and Spain to Eastern Siberia, as well as Central and South America. The distribution area includes the temperate to subtropical zones. It occurs throughout Europe with the exception of Ireland and Iceland .
The species lives in meadows and the herbaceous layer mainly in damp habitats, e.g. B. near water or on ditches, but also in damp forests.
Way of life
Sexually mature animals occur from June to October. The males are very active and can therefore be observed frequently, while the females often sit in their hiding places, e.g. B. in small twigs spun together or in a rolled-up leaf. There they guard their egg cocoons even in late summer.
Danger
The species is widespread and common in suitable habitats. In Germany it is classified as "safe" in the Red List .
