NGC 383 is an elliptical galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type E / S0 in the constellation Pisces on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 235 million light years from the Milky Way and about 135,000 light years in diameter. Together with NGC 375 , NGC 379 , NGC 380 , NGC 382 , NGC 384 , NGC 385 , NGC 386 , NGC 387 and NGC 388 , it forms the galaxy chain Arp 331 . It is a member of the NGC 452 group ( LGG 18 ) with 21 other galaxies .
Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This group of galaxies belongs to the class chains of galaxies .
The Type Ia supernova SN 2015ar was observed here.
The object was discovered on September 12, 1784 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
