Dick Garmaker

Richard Eugene "Dick" Garmaker (born October 29, 1932 in Hibbing , Minnesota ; † June 13, 2020 ) was an American basketball player . Used in the position of guard or forward, he played between 1955 and 1961 in the NBA .

Garmaker grew up in his native Hibbing, Minnesota. After graduating from school, he played for the Minnesota Golden Gophers , when he was elected to the All-American team in 1955. In 1954 and 1955 he was drafted by the Minneapolis Lakers , for which he played from the 1955/56 season. During his time with the Lakers, he took part in the All-Star Game four times . Most successfully he finished the 1956/57 season , which he finished as the tenth best player with an average of 16.3 points per game and was appointed to the All-NBA second team . In 1960 he was traded to the New York Knicks and ended his career in 1961. In total, he scored 1,748 rebounds, 1,114 assists and 5,597 points in 421 season games in the NBA (playoffs: 21 games with 98 rebounds, 67 assists and 284 points). Garmaker, who last lived in Tulsa , Oklahoma , died in June 2020 at the age of 87.
