The Roebuck Bay is located in Broome in the Kimberley region in Western Australia .

Surname

Roebuck Bay was named in 1840 by the crew of HMS Beagle after William Dampier's ship HMS Roebuck . They did so in recognition of the ship's crew for their performance during the voyage of discovery that had led them into waters in the region in 1699.

A little later, pearl divers also came to the region. Broome, which was founded in 1883, later developed from their camps - Roebuck Bay formed a natural harbor that was well suited as a settlement.

Bird protection

Roebuck Bay is of great importance for the flight of migratory birds on their way from eastern Asia to Australia. They come into the bay in huge swarms. On the north coast of Roebuck Bay, about 25 kilometers from Broome, is the Broome Bird Observatory , which opened in 1988 to observe and study bird life. The Broome Bird Observatory also develops conservation programs, writes publications and informs the public.
