Broome

Broome is a coastal city on the Indian Ocean in the Kimberley region of northern Western Australia . It is located around 2200 kilometers from Perth and has a population of 14,000 (2016).

history

The area of today's settlement was originally inhabited by the Yawurru People, an Aboriginal tribe. In 1688 and 1699, the explorer William Dampier made the first explorations of the region with the HMS Roebuck . Roebuck Bay, in which the town is located today, was named after this ship. Broome was founded on November 21, 1883. It was named after the then governor of the colony of Western Australia, Frederick Broome .

When it became known that pearls were to be found on the sea floor , Broome experienced a boom through the pearl rush and became the "pearl capital of the southern hemisphere". The town's pearl industry covered 80 percent of the world's mother-of-pearl needs. Over 5000 new settlers, mostly Chinese, Japanese, Aboriginal and South Sea islanders, were attracted. This led to numerous racially motivated clashes. In 1910 there were almost 400 pearl diving boats, so-called luggers , in Roebuck Bay . From October 1929 onwards the pearl boom ended with the global economic crisis and the appearance of artificial and cultured pearls, and the place fell into economic insignificance.

Broome was attacked by Japanese fighters on March 3, 1942 , killing 88 people.

At the beginning of the 1950s Broome experienced a small rebirth of the pearl industry, but the main economic source of income has recently been tourism. Broome has a population of around 30,000, typically around 14,000, during the high season.

Broome has been the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Broome since 1966 .

climate

Broome is located in the tropical climate zone . The dry season prevails from May to October and the rainy season from November to April. During the 'wet season' there are regular cyclonic storms.
