In 2007 he opened a wildlife park adjacent to it, in which cassowaries , emus , giant storks and other birds, kangaroos (including mountain kangaroos and wallabies ) as well as snakes and lizards can now be seen.

In 2004 Douglas was diagnosed with prostate cancer , the doctors gave him 18 months. He could defeat the disease, however. He died on September 23, 2010 in a car accident in his wildlife park. He was found wedged between his car and a tree. Douglas left his wife Valerie and two grown children.
