This marine reserve was opened in 1990 and expanded in 2004.

location

The atolls of the Rowley Shoals are based at the end of the Australian continental shelf . The reefs Imperieuse Reef and Clerke Reef and the surrounding waters each individually, spatially separated from each other, together form the Rowley Shoals Marine Park , in which three protection zones are designated. The three atolls each cover an area of 80 to 90 km².

The Rowley Shoals Marine Park is under the state of Western Australia, the Department of Conservation and Land Management (CALM). The Mermaid Reef , which lies further to the northeast, is located within the Mermaid Reef Marine National Nature Reserve , which belongs to the Commonwealth , the Australian central government, and is looked after by the Australian Nature Conservation Agency in cooperation with the CALM.

Marine life

Hard coral
Giant spotted grouper

The coral atolls of Rowley Shoals are famous for their pristine coral world, huge mussels and numerous shellfish, for the residence of the spotted giant grouper and Maori grouper, which can be up to two meters tall and weighs 200 kg, and for their large schools of jackfish , mackerel and tuna .

There are 233 corals in the marine park , including 28 hard corals , and 688 species of fish. This combination of sea creatures is unique in Australia and characterizes coral reefs in Southeast Asia rather than in West Australia.

Due to the tidal range , the reef walls of the atolls are washed over and at the highest level the Clerke and Imperieuse Reef are washed over and are only visible as sand islands.

The Bedwell Island in Clerke Reef is home to two species of rare red-tailed tropic birds . The small sandy islands are used for breeding by the tropical birds, these are the wedge-tailed shearwater, white-bellied eagles , turnstones , various terns , sandy plover , reef freeher and even pairs of the white- tailed tropical bird have been spotted.

Migratory birds from Southeast Asia also rest on Bedwell Island on their flight north to Siberia .
