The Beatmasters (or simply Beatmasters ) are a team of songwriters , musicians and producers in the dance sector who were very successful as artists in the late 1980s / early 1990s in Great Britain and then produced and mixed recordings for many other groups. As an artist, they had a number of hit singles like Burn It Up , Hey DJ! (I Can't Dance to That Music You're Playing) , Rok Da House and Who's in The House and were instrumental in the development of the Hip House subgenre , especially Rok Da House , which was recorded in the summer of 1986 and was one of the was the first, if not the first, house piece to be known from Great Britain.

Her success brought comparisons to pop producer Stock Aitken Waterman , but the Beatmasters identified producers Coldcut as their bigger rivals.

formation

Amanda Glanfield and Paul Carter (both well known in the London club scene) were working together in the television advertising jingle industry when they were introduced to musician Richard Walmsley. After hearing some of the earliest Chicago House works, the three Rock Da House recorded with the humble intention of hearing their own tunes in a nightclub. After the Beatmasters name was chosen, a limited number of copies were pressed and distributed to London clubs and pirate station DJs . To their surprise, the track also caught the attention of the burgeoning Rhythm King label and the trio soon found themselves in the company of Bomb the Bass and S'Express , who together dominated the UK charts on the same label between 1988 and 1989.

The group had seven successful singles including the hit Burn It Up with soul legend PP Arnold and Rok Da House with The Cookie Crew , which was their biggest hit at number five in the UK in 1988. Another notable single was Hey DJ! (I Can't Dance to That Music You're Playin ') , which brought British singer Betty Boo to the public and reached number seven on the British charts in 1989.

They released two albums under the name The Beatmasters : Anywayawanna 1989 and Life and Soul 1990. The albums were later summarized under the title Anywayawanna - The Best of The Beatmasters .

After Richard Walmsley left because of personal differences, Carter and Glanfield formed a very successful career as remixers and producers that continues to this day. Their first major success as a duo came in 1991 with the revised version of the single Move Any Mountain / Progen91 by The Shamen , which reached number three in the British charts and brought indie dance crossover into the world. In 1992 they strengthened their reputation by working on the new singles on The Shamen's Boss Drum album . With these reworked versions, they helped define the sound of rave culture, starting with LSI (Love Sex Intelligence) , continuing with Phorever People and the famous Ebeneezer Goode , which topped the UK charts for a month. During the release of the album's last single, Beatmasters' influence had been deemed important enough to bring the single out under the title Boss Drum (Beatmasters Radio Mix) .

The terms “ mix ” and “ remix ” could be misleading when associated with the work of the Beatmasters because they mostly edited the major version or the A-side of releases. Often times that meant rewriting the piece from scratch, or rearranging or recording the vocals so that the result turned raw demo versions into pop hits. The record industry took notice and paved their way to their door.

They produced and mixed loads of other artists who read like an A to Z of pop and benefited from their expertise, such as Marc Almond , Pet Shop Boys , Blur , Roachford , Betty Boo, Moby , Aswad , Eternal , Tina Turner , David Bowie or Girls Aloud . They continue to produce dance, pop and rock .
