NGC-507 group

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The NGC-507 group is a cluster of galaxies about 200 million light years away. The name is derived from its largest member, the elliptical galaxy NGC 507 .

Discovery story

The eponymous galaxy NGC 507 was discovered on September 12, 1784 by the German-British astronomer Friedrich Wilhelm Herschel together with NGC 495, NGC 496, NGC 499 and NGC 508. NGC 515 and NGC 517 followed a day later. His son John Herschel discovered NGC 483, NGC 494 and NGC 504 in November 1827. William Parsons contributed NGC 501 in 1856 and Heinrich Ludwig d'Arrest contributed NGC 503 in 1863. The French astronomer Stéphane Javelle discovered all IC objects in 1899 during observations from November 29th to December 2nd. Thus, most members of this galaxy cluster were already known as foggy objects by the end of the 19th century.

morphology

The WBL catalog lists 22 members of the NGC-507 group, all of whom are located in the constellation Pisces . The center of the galaxy cluster forms NGC 507 with NGC 508 (also known as Arp 229), which are about 3 million light years apart. A comparable distance as that of the Andromeda Galaxy to our Milky Way . The total extent of the cluster is about 3 × 32 arc minutes and has a depth of about 83 million light years. The group is moving away from the Milky Way at a speed of between 4,000 and 6,000 kilometers per second.

The NGC-507 group, together with the NGC-383 group, is a subgroup of the Pisces galaxy cluster , which is part of the Perseus-Pisces supercluster with the Perseus cluster .
