Joseph Michael Schmondiuk

Joseph Michael Schmondiuk , DD ; Ukrainian : Йосиф Шмондюк, (born August 6, 1912 in Wall , Pennsylvania , USA ; † December 25, 1978 ) was Metropolitan of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in the United States and Archbishop of Philadelphia .

Life

Joseph Michael Schmondiuk was the second of four children. His father Michael Schmodniuk immigrated from western Ukraine in 1909 and married Maria Schmondiuk (née Bocia). At the age of almost ten, the boy lost his parents, who died as a result of a severe flu epidemic in 1919. Joseph and his brother Michael were accepted into the orphanage of the "Sisters of St. Basil the Great" in Philadelphia . His youngest brother Emil Johannes was taken care of by the Braddock family, and his sister also fell victim to the flu .

Priesthood

Schmondiuk completed his school education in 1930 with the Abitur . On October 11, 1930, he moved to Rome and began studying theology . He studied at the Angelicum , the University of Propaganda Fide, and was housed in Rome at the seminary of the Pontifical Ukrainian College of St. Josaphat . He was ordained a priest on March 29, 1936, in the same year he completed his studies in theology with a licentiate in theology . After ordination, he returned to the United States and worked as a pastor in Aliquippa for six years. Pastorships followed in Rochester (NY) , Passic ( NJ ), and Hamtramck ( Michigan ). Pope Pius XII awarded him the title of " Pontifical Chamberlain " ( Monsignor ) in recognition of his excellent work in building the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in the USA .

Auxiliary Bishop in Philadelphia

On August 8, 1956, Pope Pius XII appointed him. the auxiliary bishop in Philadelphia and at the same time appointed him to the titular bishop of Zeugma in Syria . On November 8, 1956, the Archbishop of Philadelphia Constantine Bohacewskyi , Bishop Ambrozij Andrew Senyshyn OSBM and the Ruthenian Bishop Nicholas Thomas Elko ( Bishop in the Exarchate of the Ruthenian Greek Catholic Church for the United States of America ) consecrated him as bishop.

Bishop of Stamford

He was on August 14, 1961 by Pope John XXIII. appointed to succeed Ambrozij Andrew Senyshyn as Bishop of Stamford . As Bishop of Stamford, he was responsible for the completion of the Basilius Seminary, the seminary of the Diocese of Stamford.

Metropolitan and Archbishop of Philadelphia

From 1976 to 1977 he was simultaneously Bishop of Stamford and Apostolic Administrator of Philadelphia. On September 20, 1977 he was appointed Metropolitan and Archbishop of Philadelphia. He followed the late Archbishop Constantine Bohacewskyi to the bishopric .

General

Archbishop Schmodniuk was a member of the council from 1961 to 1965 in the four sessions of the Second Vatican Council . In 1977 he served Pope Paul VI. as personal advisor during the 4th Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops in Rome. He was co-consecrator at José Romão Martenetz OSBM, Platon Kornyljak , Jaroslav Gabro ( Eparchie Saint Nicolas of Chicago ) and Augustine Eugene Hornyak OSBM.
