The Pontifical Ukrainian College of St. Josaphat ( uk. : Українська папська колегія святого Йосафата , it. : Pontificio Collegio di San Giosafat Ukraino , s. : Ukrainian Pontifical College of Saint Josaphat ) in Rome is a Roman Colleges for seminarians and priests of the Ukrainian Greek -Catholic Church . As a patron who was Saint Josphat (1580-1623), Archbishop of Polotsk , chosen.

history

The founding of the Ukrainian College dates back to the beginning of the 16th century and was initially closely linked to the Papal Greek College of St. Athanasius . Ukrainian seminarians also studied at the college, which was founded in 1576, and were welcome here as guests until 1803. The Greek College was closed from 1803 to 1845; the first course was not started until 1845. Again Ukrainian students were enrolled and a larger Ukrainian parish was formed . On December 18, 1897, Pope Leo XIII approved (1878–1903) the Pontifical Ukrainian College of St. Josaphat, the leadership was transferred in 1904 to the Basilians of St. Josophat , who also have their General House in Rome. The Ukrainians moved into their first house in the Piazza Madonna dei Monti . On November 13, 1932, a new building was opened on the Roman hill Gianicolo . Today there are between 20 and 50 students at the college, the rector is Father Genesio Viomar OSBM .
