Jaroslav Gabro

Jaroslav Gabro (born July 31, 1919 in Chicago , Illinois , USA ; † March 28, 1980 ) was the first bishop of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church to head the Saint Nicolas of Chicago eparchy, founded in 1961 .

Life

Jaroslav Gabro was a Doctor of Theology (DD) and was ordained a priest of the Philadelphia Archepark on September 27, 1945 . On July 14, 1961, he was called to be the first bishop of the newly established Saint Nicolas of Chicago eparchy. The episcopal ordination took place on October 26, 1961, the main consecrator was the Metropolitan and Archbishop of Philadelphia Ambrozij Andrew Senyshyn OSBM. Bishop Isidore Borecky of Toronto ( Canada ) and Bishop Joseph Michael Schmondiuk of Stamford (USA) assisted as co-consecrators .

Bishop Gabro was a participant in the four sessions of the Second Vatican Council (1961–1965). As a result of the establishment of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Diocese , he inaugurated several church buildings and laid the foundations for new church facilities. He was co-consecrator of Basil Harry Losten as titular bishop of Arcadiopolis in Asia ( auxiliary bishop in Philadelphia) and John Stock as titular bishop of Pergamum (auxiliary bishop in Philadelphia).
