Stephen Sulyk

Stephen M. Sulyk (born October 2, 1924 in Balnica ( Lemkenland ), Poland ; † April 6, 2020 ) was Archbishop of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church united with Rome and Metropolitan of the Archeparchy of Philadelphia , USA.

Life

Stephen Sulyk was born in 1924 in the village of Balnca, which was occupied by the German Wehrmacht from 1939 . In 1939/1940 he was taken to Germany for agricultural work, but did not return after a vacation in his home village in 1940. He attended a German-speaking grammar school and in 1944 fled with his family from the Red Army to Germany and on to the Sudetenland . Because of his language skills, he survived as a translator for the Soviet army. With forged travel documents he fled to the US-American occupied zone in Germany. He finished his schooling in a refugee camp and from 1946 studied at the seminary of the Greek Catholic Church in Hirschberg Castle near Beilngries . Relatives of an uncle in Michigan gave him permission to emigrate to the United States in 1948. After brief employment in an automobile manufacturing facility and butcher shop in Dearborn , Michigan, he entered the St. Josaphat Seminary in Washington, DC , USA in 1949 . Sulyk received on 14 June 1952 by Archbishop Constantine Bohacewskyi the priesthood and was in the care of souls in Nebraska , New York , Pennsylvania , Ohio , Texas and New Jersey operates. In 1955 he became secretary to the Archbishop of the Philadelphia Archepark . In 1958 he was appointed papal honorary chaplain . In 1961 he became pastor of St. Nicholas in Philadelphia .

Pope John Paul II appointed him Archbishop and Metropolitan of the Philadelphia Archeparch in 1980. He was ordained bishop on March 1, 1981 by Jossyf Cardinal Slipyj , Archbishop of Lemberg and Patriarch of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church; Co- consecrators were Basil Harry Losten , Bishop of the Stamford Eparchy, and Neil Nicholas Savaryn OSBM, Bishop of the Edmonton Eparchy.

Stephen Sulyk was a friend of the Jesuit missionary Walter Ciszek (1904–1984). As a member of the Bishops' Conference of the United States , he was responsible for organizing the ceremonies.

Pope John Paul II granted his age-related resignation on November 29, 2000. He was succeeded by Stephen Soroka .

In 2003 his autobiography I Am with You Always was published .

Stephen Sulyk died in early April 2020 at the age of 95 as a result of a SARS-CoV-2 infection.
