Wolf Günther Koch (born January 15, 1943 in Hirschfeld ) is a German cartographer .

Life

After graduating from high school in Auerbach, Vogtland, Wolf Günther Koch learned the profession of surveyor from 1961 at VEB Topographischer Dienst Dresden and worked as an assistant topographer for the topographical survey in the Saxon Ore Mountains . From 1963 to 1969 he studied cartography at the Technical University of Dresden , where he then worked as an assistant and from 1977 as a senior assistant. In 1975 he received his PhD A with a dissertation on the subject of "Investigations into the use of automatic typing and light setting machines for two-dimensional representations in thematic cartography ". In 1980 he was given the Facultas Docendi for card editing. In 1980 and 1985 he went to Poland (Universities in Warsaw and Wroclaw ) to study, in particular environmental cartography . In 1989 the " PhD B " followed with a thesis on experimental cartography for Dr. sc. tech. for cartography , which in 1991 in Dr.-Ing. habil. was converted for cartography .

From 1990 to 2008 Wolf Günther Koch was the head of the cartography course and in 1992 became professor for theoretical cartography and map design at the Institute for Cartography of the Faculty of Forest, Geo and Hydro Sciences at the Technical University of Dresden, where he was director from 1992 to 1994 and from 2000 to 2000 2003 was. From 2005 to 2006 he was dean of studies for geodesy , cartography and astronomy . The focus of his scientific work lies in the field of theoretical cartography, map design and the history of cartography, as his numerous publications show. When he reached the age limit, Wolf Günther Koch retired in 2008 , but continues to work at the Technical University of Dresden.

Wolf Günter Koch is married and has a son and a daughter.
