Michael Kuchmiak

Michael Kuchmiak CSsR ( Ukrainian Михайло Кучмяк Mychajlo Kutschmjak * 5. February 1923 in Obertyn , Ukraine ; †  26. August 2008 in Saskatoon , Saskatchewan , Canada ) was Bishop of Rome with Uniate Greek Catholic Church of Ukraine and Apostolic Exarch for the UK .

Life

Michael Kuchmiak left Ukraine after the Second World War and studied at the Ukrainian St. Josaphat Seminary in Rome (1945-1946) and at St. Mary's Seminary in Meadowvale , Ontario. In 1954 he became a Canadian citizen. He joined the Congregation of the Redemptorists in and received on 13 May 1956, the priestly ordination . After serving as superior of the Redemptorist Seminary in Yorkton , Saskatchewan, he worked in the USA from 1967 and pastor of the Ukrainian congregation of St. John the Baptist in Newark , New Jersey from 1975 to 1987 .

Pope John Paul II appointed him titular bishop of Agathopolis in 1988 and appointed him auxiliary bishop in the Philadelphia Archepark. The episcopal ordination donated him on April 27, 1988 Archbishop Stephen Sulyk , the metropolitan of the Archeparchy of Philadelphia; Co- consecrators were Maxim Hermaniuk CSsR, Archbishop of the Winnipeg Eparchy, and Innocent Hilarion Lotocky OSBM, Bishop of the St. Nicholas Eparchy in Chicago.

On July 11, 1989, he was appointed Apostolic Exarch of the Apostolic Exarchate for Great Britain .

In 2003 Pope John Paul II accepted Kuchmiak's resignation, which was based on his age.
