Peter Stasiuk CSsR ( Ukrainian Петро Стасюк ; born July 16, 1943 in Roblin , Manitoba , Canada ) is Bishop Emeritus of Melbourne for the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Australia , New Zealand and Oceania .

Life

Peter Stasiuk joined the Redemptorist Order and took his temporary religious vows on August 28, 1962 . Studies in Canada, the USA and the Ukraine followed . He made his perpetual vows on 28 August 1965 and was in Chicago for a deacon ordained. The ordination received his Archbishop Maxim Hermaniuk CSsR of Winnipeg on July 2, 1967 in Winnipeg.

From 1967 to 1974, Father Stasiuk served as a pastor in the Redemptorist Parish of Roblin, Canada. During this time he also taught at the seminary and was appointed professor . In 1981 he took over a parish in Toronto and was also Superior of the Toronto-based Redemptorists. In 1981 he returned to Roblin and held various positions.

On December 16, 1992 he was appointed Ukrainian Greek Catholic Bishop of Melbourne and successor to Ivan Prasko . The emeritus Archbishop of Winnipeg, Maxim Hermaniuk CSsR, and the co-consecrators Archbishop Stephen Sulyk of Philadelphia and Bishop Myron Daciuk Michel OSBM of Edmonton donated to him on March 9, 1993, the episcopal ordination .

Bishop Peter Stasiuk was co- consecrator of Kenneth Anthony Adam Nowakowski , Bishop of New Westminster , and Yosyf Milan MSU , Titular Bishop of Drusiliana and Auxiliary Bishop in the Grand Archbishopric of Kiev-Halytsch . Bishop Stasiuk is a member of the Bishops' Conference of Oceania.

On January 15, 2020, Pope Francis accepted Peter Stasiuk's resignation due to reasons of age.

Award

Bishop Stasiuk was honored with membership of the Order of Australia (AM) on January 26, 2009, Australia Day . He received this honorary certificate for his service to religion and the development work for the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Australia. The medal was presented to him by the Governor General of Australia , Quentin Alice Louise Bryce AD .

On the shortage of priests in Oceania

At the special assembly of the Synod of Bishops for Oceania (November 22nd - December 12th, 1998) the assembled bishops discussed the shortage of priests in Oceania.

“The change in the admission regulations for ordination was expressly requested by not a few bishops. They received support from the eparchen of the Ukrainian Church in Australia, Peter Stasiuk, who saw the refusal to ordain married deacons as priests as the reason for tensions between the Eastern and Western Churches ... "
