The archeparchy São João Batista em Curitiba ( lat. Archieparchia Sancti Ioannis Baptistae Curitibensis Ucrainorum ) is with Rome Uniate archeparchy the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Brazil .
Diocese history
Members of the religious order of the Basilians of St. Josaphat established the first mission station in Brazil in 1897 . Between 1931 and 1948 this religious institution developed into the Order of St. Joseph in Brazil. The Archbishop of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro Jaime Cardinal de Barros Câmara was born in 1952 by Pope Pius XII . Appointed Apostolic Visitor for the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Brazil. In 1958, José Romão Martenetz OSBM was appointed auxiliary bishop for the faithful of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Brazil.
Today's Eparchy of São João Batista em Curitiba (Eparchy of St. John the Baptist ) comes from the Apostolic Exarchate , which was founded on May 30, 1962 for the United Ukrainians in Brazil. The elevation to the eparchy took place on November 29, 1971. The headquarters of the eparchy is located in Curitiba , the capital of the Brazilian state Paraná .
Pope Francis elevated the eparchy to the rank of archparchy and metropolitan seat on May 12, 2014 . At the same time she gave territorial shares to the establishment of the Eparchy Imaculada Conceição in Prudentópolis . This received the previous auxiliary bishop Meron Mazur OSBM as the first bishop and was subordinated to the new archeparch as a suffragan .
