Janneke de Vries (* 1968 in Weener , East Friesland ) is a German art historian and curator .

Life

Janneke de Vries was born in Rheiderland and grew up in Leer . After graduating from high school, she studied art history, modern German literary history and European ethnology at the Universities of Marburg and Hamburg . De Vries wrote her master's thesis for the Hamburg art historian Wolfgang Kemp on the shadow in the work of Christian Boltanski .

According to a statement by Janneke de Vries, an impulse for her professional activities in art came from the 1981 sculpture group Suddenly this overview by the artist duo Peter Fischli and David Weiss . During her studies, Janneke de Vries worked as a freelancer at the MMK Museum for Modern Art in Frankfurt am Main and published as an art critic in the Frankfurter Rundschau as well as in the artist (Bremen) and visual arts magazines . From 1999 to 2003 de Vries was editor-in-chief of the regional art magazine artkaleidoscope in Frankfurt am Main.

After doing freelance curatorial projects and working as a research assistant for Yilmaz Dziewior at the Kunstverein in Hamburg , Janneke de Vries took over the management of the Kunstverein Braunschweig in 2006 . Between 2008 and 2018 she was director of the GAK Society for Current Art in Bremen and a freelance critic a. a. at the art magazines artist and texts on art . Since 2018 she has headed the Weserburg Museum for Modern Art in Bremen.
