The art gallery Krems-Stein in Stein an der Donau is an international exhibition house in Lower Austria, which was built from 1992 to 1995 according to the plans of the architect Adolf Krischanitz in the former tobacco factory of the tobacco control room in the Stein district. The art gallery was temporarily closed from June 2016 to July 2017, as it was completely renovated for 3.5 million euros and reopened on July 1, 2017. The Minorite Church , among other things, served as alternative quarters .

The art gallery is part of the Krems art mile and is in close proximity to the Krems Caricature Museum and the Lower Austria State Gallery , to which there is even an underground passage from the art gallery.

It shows art after 1945, with a focus on the contemporary. The Kunsthalle Krems is an institution that offers both established and up-and-coming young positions from home and abroad a large platform on which innovative, cross-media, current societal and art-specific contributions are negotiated. These presentations take the form of comprehensive themed and solo exhibitions. There are also exhibitions of private collections of modern and contemporary art. The media focus ranges from the classic disciplines such as painting, drawing and sculpture through photography, video, film and performance to installation and other conceptual and new media disciplines.

Through the annual cooperation with the Danube Festival, the Kunsthalle Krems underlines its interdisciplinary and progressive orientation.

In 2017 the Kunsthalle Krems gained an additional exhibition space with the Dominican Church. The focus is on spatial projects in Gothic sacred architecture.

The challenge for the architect Adolf Krischanitz was to design the premises of a former tobacco factory built in 1852 in such a way that the overall plan and all technical systems corresponded to the highest international standard of a modern exhibition hall. This was the only way to create the conditions for presenting first-class works of art in exhibitions. In addition to an elaborate air conditioning system, the Kunsthalle technically has an alarm system, a digital camera recording system that monitors the neuralgic points inside and outside the exhibition area, modern lighting and sound technology as well as a modern ticketing and merchandise management system. With around 2000 square meters, the Kunsthalle Krems has one of the largest exhibition areas in Austria. In addition, there are the service areas, the depot and storage rooms.
