In addition to clearly documentary works, since the end of the 1990s he has also turned to subjects that appear more picturesque, such as B. in his photo book "fecit" (photos from Australian forests, among others). His architectural photographs, such as bridges, stairwells, corridors or subway stations, show seemingly banal things, sometimes only fragments, in a disciplined form without great sensual stimuli.

Axel Hütte reflects on the mimetic possibilities of photography. The question of his photographic work is not the exact depiction of reality by means of the camera, but the reflection of the relationship between image and imaginary image.

This is how he describes his work in the comprehensive exhibition in the Kunsthalle Krems: “ Imperial, Majestic and Magical refer to concrete and at the same time enigmatic visual worlds that appear familiar to us but appear strange in the picture. They should reactivate memories or dreams in the viewer, that is, address implicit memory, and make the world tangible as real and at the same time as imagination. "
