Jonas Burgert (* 1969 in West Berlin ) is a contemporary painter , he lives and works in Berlin. His artistic work has been represented since 2005 by the producers' gallery in Hamburg and the BlainSouthern gallery in London and Berlin.

Life

Jonas Burgert studied from 1991 to 1996 at the Berlin University of the Arts , in 1997 as a master student with Dieter Hacker . From 1998 to 2000 he received the young talent scholarship of the UdK Berlin and a travel grant that enabled him to stay in Egypt.

In 1999, together with the artist Ingolf Keiner , Burgert developed the exhibition series Fractals, which so far has taken place four times in different, sometimes spectacular locations; the last fractal was in 2005 in the Palace of the Republic as the last exhibition before its demolition.

In wall-filling paintings, Burgert initially created an all-over of penetrating ornaments, oriental motifs and cell structures intertwined. Signs and types of ancient cultures already played a central role in his abstract pictures, such as quotations from the funerary art of ancient Egypt. Since 2003 figures have been conquering his pictures, first animals, then people, whose behavior often seems to stem from archaic rites .

Its completely independent worlds, built according to its own logic, are enlivened by shamans who meet modern city citizens, Commedia dell'arte figures and skeletons from old woodcuts that seek their way in the inhospitable modern cities - and again and again animals that could come from the emblematic . The large areas of his pictures - walls, streets and floors - are always like membranes that point to something behind, which we do not know, or can at best guess with the means of art.

Burgert's masterfully painted pictures are riddles that deal with cultures both close and foreign, with trust and affection, struggle and self-assertion, life and death.

Jonas Burgert: “The basic idea of my pictures is to paint the stage on which the struggle for spiritual representation takes place. A stage on which people define themselves in all their absurdities, contradictions, hopes and longings [...] Maybe that sounds presumptuous, but I am of the opinion that these terms cannot be named otherwise. This process leaves traces, which is why I often paint scenes in which the result of an action can be seen - the 'beautiful' filth of an inner struggle. The time and place at which the scenery takes place should not be clearly defined, as this fundamental examination of oneself is a timeless phenomenon. In principle, it is always about a symbolic, existential gesture by people. "
