Carl-Erik Holmberg (born July 17, 1906 , † June 5, 1991 ) was a Swedish football player . The striker , who was top scorer three times in the Allsvenskan , played 14 international matches for the Swedish national team between 1926 and 1932 .

Career

Holmberg made his debut in the opening season 1924/25 for Örgryte IS in the Allsvenskan and was one of the club's best goalscorers with eleven goals this season alongside Sven Rydell and Erik Börjesson . In the following season he was the top scorer in the entire league with 29 goals this season and thus played a key role in ensuring that the Gothenburg club finished first in the league. Until 1930, however, the Swedish championship title was not awarded. He had also played his way into the Swedish national team and made his debut against Czechoslovakia in the national jersey in June . In the 2-2 draw, he scored his first international goal shortly before the end.

Also in the following two seasons Holmberg scored double digits. At the end of the opening season 1927/28 he finished after 27 goals this season again both first place in the goalscorer list of the league and with the club in the final table. In the following season Bror Carlsson ran out of rank and was placed with 21 goals this season alongside Rydell with 22 goals in the club's internal goalscorer list, well ahead of Holmberg, who had scored eight goals. This was also reflected in the national team, he was only appointed once in 1929 and 1930. At the same time, the club slipped in the league and ended the seasons 1929/30 and 1930/31 in sixth and seventh place in the table, respectively.

In the following season 1931/32 Holmberg found back to old goal danger. In the opening game against Landskrona BoIS he scored 29 goals this season three times by the end of the season. With that again the Allsvenskan top scorer, it was enough for the team this time only for the runner-up behind the Stockholm club AIK . He returned to the national team in 1932 and scored one goal in each of his three international appearances. The club slipped back into midfield in the following years. He was also a regular goalscorer at the 1934 World Cup in the Swedish squad, but was not used during the tournament. Until 1939 Holmberg ran for the club in the Allsvenskan and remained a goal threat until the end of his career, although Yngve Lindegren had replaced him as the club's top striker. In the 1940s he got involved as a functionary at his long-term club.

Holmberg's 260 league games meant a club record for a long time; only Niclas Sjöstedt was able to surpass this mark in 2000. He scored 194 first division goals, which puts him in second place behind Sven Jonasson in the Allsvenskan all-time goalscorer list .
