Career
societies
Emerging from the youth of IFK Göteborg , Johnny Ekström moved up in 1984 in their professional team. There he made his breakthrough; as a fast striker, he drew international attention when his club advanced to the semi-finals of the European Cup (forerunner of the Champions League ) in 1986 and was only eliminated on penalties against FC Barcelona .
The 1986/87 season saw the first transfer abroad - to the Italian first division club FC Empoli (newcomer to Serie A ). After two seasons, he switched to the Bundesliga for Bayern Munich . On July 23, 1988 (1st matchday) he made his debut in a 3-0 win at home against Eintracht Frankfurt and crowned it with his first goal, the 2-0 in the 81st minute. From July 1, 1994, Johnny Ekström was under contract with Dynamo Dresden . Eintracht Frankfurt was Ekström's third Bundesliga club in Germany from July 1, 1995. In the first season, his two goals in 16 games were not enough to keep the class. In the following season Ekström completed 18 second division games in which he scored five goals and ended on June 11, 1997 (34th matchday), in a 2-1 win in the away game against VfB Oldenburg after 64 minutes, his footballing work in Germany.
He returned to the club where he started his career: To IFK Göteborg. After one season for this and three goals in the Allsvenskan , he ended his football career.
National team
On May 1, 1986, he made his debut in Malmö in the senior team in a goalless draw against the selection of Greece . He then wore the national jersey 46 times and was part of the respective squad at the 1990 World Cup in Italy and the 1992 European Championship in his own country.
