Villa Manin

The Villa Manin in Codroipo near Udine was built in the 17th century in the style of a country villa of the Venetian nobility. It belonged to the Venetian Manin family . 1789–1797 it was the residence of Ludovico Manin , the last Doge of Venice . When Napoléon Bonaparte conquered the Republic of Venice , Manin had to resign from the Doge's office in August 1797.

On October 17, 1797, the Peace of Campo Formio between France, represented by Napoléon Bonaparte, and Emperor Franz II for Austria was concluded in the Villa Manin .

The villa was built for Antonio Manin from 1650 and completed under his grandsons Ludovico and Francesco; Between 1710 and 1720 it was probably expanded by Domenico Rossi , who was also commissioned by the Manin family to build the Santa Maria Assunta detta I Gesuiti and to renovate the cathedral in Udine . Rossi called various artists, among whom was Louis Dorigny from Paris . The chapel and a large exedra were built , and the villa was decorated with frescoes.

In the left annex of the main building there is a restaurant "Il Doge", in the right annex a small carriage and weapons museum, as well as a relatively large baroque style castle chapel dedicated to St. Andrew , which was decorated by Giuseppe Torretti and his colleagues Francesco Bonazza and Pietro Baratta . In front of it, the former stable buildings run in a semicircle, only interrupted by the former entrance. This driveway, a bridge, is decorated with figures; there is a pond below. In 1954 Ernest Hemingway was a guest of the Kechler family, who owned the villa at the time.

The entire complex is richly decorated with sculptures mostly by Giuseppe Torretti, as is the case with other buildings by Rossi, which are among his best works.

The spacious villa covers 8,500 square meters and is located on the edge of an extensive English landscape park of 18 hectares , in which botanical rarities from all over the world can be seen (including bamboo , Lebanese cedar ). In keeping with the taste of the times, there is a (dried up) pond and a hill with figures from Greek mythology .
