Pietro Baratta (sculptor)
Pietro Baratta (* 28. January 1668 in Carrara , † 2. February 1729 ) was an Italian sculptor of the Baroque , active in Venice in the second half of the seventeenth century to the early eighteenth century.
Student of his workshop was u. a. the sculptor Francesco Robba .
Works
Pietro Baratta designed the sculptures on the facade of the chapel of the Villa Manin near Passariano, Codroipo ( Udine ), including the statues of the four evangelists and the Madonna and Child. He is also credited with five sculptures - St. Rocco, S. Antonius, the Virgin of the Rosary, S. Matthew and John the Baptist - on the facade of the parish church of St. Maria in Villa Vicentina (built between 1660 and 1680). In Venice, in Santa Maria Assunta detta I Gesuiti, there is a statue of St. Ignatius of Loyola , who he depicted with a contemplative expression and an open Bible in his hands.
