Walter Vopava

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Walter Vopava (born May 10, 1948 in Vienna ) is an Austrian painter . He is one of the representatives of the New Abstraction in Austria.

Life

Vopava studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts with Professor Maximilian Melcher .

Vopava originally found his approach to painting through studies of nature. From the late 1980s he gave up any figurative rudiments in his work in favor of pure abstraction . Imagery and contrasts between light and dark, surface and space, solidity and emptiness increasingly came to the fore in his work, reality was gradually transformed and faded out in his works.

Starting in 2000 Vopava devoted primarily a construction of the pictorial space and avoided any association with the figurative . The color black is a constant in his ambitious, sometimes monumental pictures. His abstract painting is not necessarily a stylistic device for him, but offers him the opportunity to explore the origins of this art form. He concentrates on the essentials in his work and excludes any restrictions.
