Karl Ewald Deul (born March 1, 1907 in Luckenwalde ; † July 19, 2002 there ) was a German painter .

Life

Deul was born as the fifth child of a cloth maker. During the First World War his childhood was marred by famine . In 1921 he finished school and trained as a sculptor until 1924 . His apprenticeship years were economically marked by inflation . In 1927 he attended the art school in Warmbrunn. There he was awarded for his Kynast model. He then began to study art in Munich in 1929. The city of Luckenwalde supported his studies with 30 Deutsche Mark . In 2001 he gave Luckenwalde around 40 originals. The time of his studies in Munich was an artistically productive phase of life, through which he not only financed his studies, but also his living.

He returned to Luckenwalde in 1932 because the academy no longer received any orders due to the political situation during the Nazi regime . This created financial problems for Deul. In 1937 he came to the Army Construction Office in Jüterbog and was drafted into the Wehrmacht in 1944. The late arrival of the Wehrmacht was due to his eye damage.

Soon after the end of the war and after a short imprisonment in Denmark , he returned to his hometown at Christmas 1945. The cruelty and horror of war influenced the further life of the Deul. He intended to use his artistic means to help shape a new, peaceful Germany .

From 1950 Deul worked for two years as a cultural advisor at the German Administrative Academy Forst Zinna . In 1952 he became a member of the Association of Fine Artists of the GDR . He later worked as a teacher for art education in Luckenwalde . In 1973 Ewald Deul retired.

Ewald Deul had four siblings Otto, Martin, Walter and Liesel. His brother Walter fell victim to the war in 1915. In 1935 Ewald Deul married his wife Else and had their son Florian in 1940. On December 20, 1982, his wife Else, whom he had previously cared for for three years due to a stroke, died. A year later his son Florian also died. He lived with his partner Sieglinde Tonn from 1984 until his death. In 2002 he died and was buried in the cemetery in front of the Jüterboger Tor.

Since March 2008 there have been personal steles in Luckenwalder Nuthepark as historical symbols. One of these steles was dedicated to Ewald Deul.
