Hans Op de Beeck

Hans Op de Beeck (born June 3, 1969 in Turnhout , Belgium ) is a visual artist. He lives and works in Anderlecht ( Brussels ).

I really love old- fashioned painting and the idea of giving the world a window. The viewer is invited to just stare at something. I hope to conjure up this moment, to simply put your own story aside and be alone with or in a picture. For me this is the breadth of art that I also discover in ancient painting. Just look at a landscape by Joachim Patinir or an interior painting by Johannes Vermeer and let go of everything. I believe very strongly in the old idea of catharsis, which is tragic and difficult but comforting in the quality of the picture. "

Education

Hans Op de Beeck studied fine art at the Institut Saint-Luc in Brussels. He then completed postgraduate studies at HISK (Antwerp) and the National Academy (Amsterdam). Between 2002 and 2003 he took part in the MoMA-PS1 Studio Program (New York).

Settlement in art

Hans Op de Beeck works across disciplines and presents contemporary imaginary, urban and inner places, situations and environments that appear familiar to the viewer.

Op de Beeck's imagery is calm and reserved and addresses the big questions in life. He alternates between serious and ironic questions, which he leaves unanswered. The artist sees his work as a way to process the melancholy and absurdity of human existence.
