Art club

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Art Club (also: artclub ) was a Viennese artists' association of the post-war period .

history

The Art Club was founded in 1946 (according to another source in 1947) as one of the most progressive platforms for young painters, sculptors, authors and musicians in the struggle for the autonomy of modern art. Kurt Moldovan was a founding member of the Austrian section of the Art Club.

Meeting points were the studios of Maria Biljan-Bilger , Heinz Leinfellner , Wander Bertoni and Susanne Wenger , but also Cafe Raimund, Cafe Glory, Espresso Stanbul, Cafe Falstaff and the Strohkoffer.

The group's president and prominent mentor was Albert Paris Gütersloh . The group activities were promoted by Alfred Schmeller . Art Club exhibitions mostly took place in the Zedlitzhalle or in the Vienna Secession . For a long time, the artistic appearance of the Art Club was characterized by the peaceful coexistence of surrealists ( Vienna School of Fantastic Realism ) and abstracts. Wieland Schmied suspects that the multiple generous help from Rudolf Carl von Ripper for Art Club events was made possible by the secret service of the CIA .

The Art Club dissolved in 1959.
