Alfred Schmeller

Alfred Schmeller (born March 11, 1920 in Erlangen , † September 19, 1990 in Vienna ) was a German-Austrian art historian, journalist and museum director.

biography

Schmeller lived in Vienna since 1943, later also partly in Neumarkt an der Raab in Burgenland , see Künstlerdorf Neumarkt an der Raab . After 1945 he was secretary of the Art Club founded in 1947 and editor of the magnum magazine . Afterwards Schmeller worked in the preservation of monuments and was state curator for Burgenland and Vienna. After all, from 1969 to 1979 he was director of the culturally influential “ 20er Haus ”, the Austrian Museum of the 20th Century, which opened in 1962 in Vienna's Schweizergarten . Schmeller developed a rich journalistic activity. He was married to the artist Martha Jungwirth since 1969 . He was buried in the cemetery of the Simmering fire hall (group E11, no. 394).
