Rudolf Hausner's father was a commercial employee. Artistically he worked as a Sunday painter, which made Rudolf Hausner enthusiastic about art very early on. From 1923 to 1931 he attended the Realgymnasium Schottenbastei in Vienna. He then began his studies at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna with Carl Fahringer and Karl Sterrer .

In 1937 Rudolf Hausner was drafted into the Austrian Armed Forces . In 1938 his painting was banned from being exhibited by the Reich Chamber of Culture . In 1941 he was drafted into the German armed forces. During this time there was his formative traumatic log cabin experience in the Russian Tatras , which he takes up again and again in his later works. His first artistic phase was influenced by impressionism and expressionism . After the war he resumed work in his destroyed studio in Vienna and tried to project the Tatra view into his work process. In 1946 Rudolf Hausner founded a surrealist group in the Austrian Art Club together with Edgar Jené , Ernst Fuchs , Wolfgang Hutter and Fritz Janschka . Anton Lehmden and Arik Brauer later joined this loose artists' association. The first exhibition in the Vienna Konzerthaus followed .

In 1956 Hausner finished his painting 'Arche des Odysseus' after six years of work. In 1957 Hausner's first Adam picture was created , which he varied over and over again. He tried to portray the existence of conscious and unconscious processes as equivalent and thus came into conflict with the popular surrealist orthography of other artists and art critics.

In 1959 Rudolf Hausner took part in the documenta II in Kassel . In the same year the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism was founded with Rudolf Hausner . Instead of being assigned to Surrealism, the term Fantastic Realism developed by Johann Muschik prevailed for Rudolf Hausner's work. In the same year Rudolf Hausner exhibited for the first time in a group exhibition at the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere in Vienna. Numerous international exhibitions followed. In addition, Rudolf Hausner gave lectures and accepted guest lecturer positions in Hamburg and Tokyo .

From 1966 Hausner was a university professor in Hamburg and from 1968 professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. A special feature of his painting technique is the use of translucent ("glazing") resin oil paints applied in more than 10 layers on top of each other over underpainting of acrylic paints, which give the color a special luminous depth. He also developed methods to create flawless transitions in pure oil painting without the use of an airbrush.

He published articles and books on his work and art history .

He also designed stamps for the Austrian Post and the United Nations Postal Administration .
