Stage design
Her first stage sets were material collages from demolished houses, junkyards and rubbish dumps. From there she fetched her raw material, from which she assembled rooms that lived on the tension between naturalistic meticulousness and abstract cipher, between history and actuality. Her favorite figure was the oxymoron, the combination of opposites, the concentrated union of everything that tears apart chaotically.
painting
From 1990 Xenia Hausner turned to painting. In her painterly work she deals with people. Thematically, it leads the viewer into a puzzling world of images. The situations are ambiguous, the viewer should explore the picture with his own life. Xenia Hausner's large-format works are descriptions of society and tell of the mysterious world of interpersonal relationships; they are deliberately fragmentary situations and snapshots from everyday life. In contrast to classic portraits, those portrayed in the pictures play their roles in someone else's biographies, they are cast like actors in a play. She uses an expressive style and a richly colored palette, which is particularly evident in the flesh of the protagonists. Xenia Hausner also deals with works on paper and mixed-media works, in which she further develops her large-format photographs in a painterly manner and incorporates various materials into the image carrier as set pieces. In her artistic work, she brings together the current state of knowledge of painting with that of photography. This creates a new condensation of images and a construction of reality using different techniques. Hand-picked unique pieces in small editions on hand-made paper may refer to the themes of your painting in terms of motifs, but new pictorial inventions emerge that form an independent area technically and medially. With the preparations for the exhibition “Damage” in 2011 in the Shanghai Art Museum, she began to work intensively with Asian, primarily Chinese, motifs. Their inclusion in their special handwriting gives an insight into the networks of global, contemporary art.
Projects
In addition to painting, photography is an essential element of her work and her collection of materials. She is involved with Women Without Borders and their project SAVE (Sisters Against Violent Extremism) and uses the camera to document people with extreme experiences. There is a strong interest in architecture-related projects - such as the wrapping of the Ringturm in Vienna in 2011 or the design or design of church windows (Kilian's Church in Heilbronn, St. Johannis Church in Gehrden, St. Johannes and St. Laurentius Merseburg Cathedral ).
