Life

While Mollison has so far been more prominent to the public due to his numerous appearances and his focus on teaching and dissemination of permaculture and received the Right Livelihood Award (“Alternative Nobel Prize”) for his efforts in 1981 , David Holmgren is considered more conscientious both theoretically and in practice and detailed researchers and practitioners of permaculture principles . With his new book Permaculture. Principles and Pathways Beyond Sustainability , he is currently the most advanced thinker of the global permaculture movement . His own project Melliodora , which has existed for 17 years, is not only one of the most famous demonstration projects in Australia , it also identifies him as an excellent permaculture practitioner and designer, whose application knowledge is as broad as it is well-founded.

David Holmgren was born in Western Australia in 1955. As the child of politically active parents, he was particularly influenced by the social movements of the 1960s and 70s. During a tour of Australia in 1973, he fell in love with the landscape of Tasmania and joined the innovative Environmental Design School in Hobart one. The intensive working relationship with his mentor Bill Mollison led to the publication of the permaculture concept three years later and thus set the course for the rest of his life. Since then, his main focus has been the implementation and experimental confirmation of the permaculture concept.

Holmgren has written several books, developed and implemented three projects based on permaculture principles, and led courses and workshops in Australia. For 17 years he has lived with his wife Su Dennet and his son Oliver on his project farm Melliodora and has gained a wealth of experience as a designer and planner in his bioregion in south-east Australia. In the international permaculture movement, Holmgren is valued above all for his commitment, with which he repeatedly demonstrates the possibilities of permaculture through practical projects. He teaches through personal examples and shows that a sustainable lifestyle can be a realistic, attractive and effective alternative to addictive consumption .
