Achim Heine

Achim Heine (born June 11, 1955 ) is a German product designer and professor for experimental design at the University of the Arts . He is co-founder of the design agency Heine / Lenz / Zizka .

Life

Achim Heine studied mathematics and physics at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt and design at the Offenbach University of Design .

In 1985 he started the Ginbande design project with Uwe Fischer . The works have been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world and a large part of them are in the collection of the Vitra Design Museum , Weil am Rhein. Ginbande's experimental furniture designs include folding furniture (1985), Tabula rasa (1987), Tabula Varia (1988), Hommage à Panton (1990), rows of seats (1990), children's furniture (1991) and the Jehi Or chandelier (1991) . In addition to his experimental work, Ginbande designed products for Vitra ( Nexus table system , 1990), room lighting series ( Take Five , 1992), the wallpaper manufacturer Rasch ( B100 , 1992) and the Swiss furniture manufacturer Wogg ( Wogg 16 , 1995), among others . In 1995, at the Museum für Kunsthandwerk Frankfurt, works by Ginbande were exhibited as part of the exhibition 13 after Memphis . In the same year, Heine and Uwe Fischer ended the Ginbande project.

In 1989, Heine founded the design agency Heine / Lenz / Zizka together with Michael Lenz and Peter Zizka. At the locations in Frankfurt am Main and Berlin, Heine / Lenz / Zizka is active in the field of visual communication and brand development and works for numerous cultural institutions such as the Hamburger Kunsthalle or the German Museum as well as medium-sized companies such as Viessmann , T + A Elektroakustik or Leica Camera AG

As a product designer, Heine designed numerous analog and digital cameras for Leica, including the Leica C1, C2 and C3, the Leica CM and CM Zoom, the Leica Digilux 1 and 2 and the Leica D-Lux 1, as well as the Ultravid binocular series. The Leica watch collection presented in 2018 with the models L1 and L2 was also designed by him. In the field of experimental design, Heine developed the furniture installations Fata Morgana (1995), which is in the collection of the Vitra Design Museum, and the double room (2004).

In 2010, Heine participated as a partner in The Impossible Project in the rescue of the last Polaroid film factory in Enschede, the Netherlands. As chief designer, he was responsible for the development of the Impossible brand as well as the conception and design of new products. During this time, various camera models and the Impossible Instant Lab were created , which makes it possible to expose and develop images that were recorded with a smartphone on instant film.

As editor, Heine is also dedicated to photography. For example, he initiated and edited the publication Positions der Brandenkultur on the Leica brand, the catalogs From Polaroid to Impossible , Instant Statements and photo books about photographers such as Oliver Mark and Wolfgang Zurborn .

Heine has received numerous prizes and awards, including the German Communication Design Prize, the Type Directors Club New York, gold and silver medals at the iF Design Award , medals and awards at the Art Directors Club and the DDC Grand Prix .

Since 1993 Heine has been teaching as a professor for experimental design at the Berlin University of the Arts. He has carried out various research projects as part of collaborations with other universities and companies.
