Life

Zizka is the younger son of the social politician Walburga Zizka and Cyril Zizka, who came from a Prague sign painter family. After graduating from the Goethe-Gymnasium (Frankfurt am Main) , Zizka trained as a restorer and then studied graphics, design and visual communication at the Offenbach am Main University of Design a . a. with Adam Jankowski . At the same time he attended the Städelschule in Frankfurt and studied a. a. at Bruce McLean .

In 1989 Zizka founded the design office Heine / Lenz / Zizka together with Achim Heine and Michael Lenz .

With Olaf Rahlwes, the conceptual art group Memory emerged in the mid-1980s and worked at the interface between art and design until the early 1990s. After separating from Memory , Zizka worked on projects in the field of socially relevant design and took a less agitative position in his work than that of the communication guerrilla or an adbuster like Banksy . The best-known work from this period is the floor installation Virtual Minefield, with which Zizka received Gold at the European Art Directors Club . The work was shown in the Kunsthal Rotterdam , in the Foreign Office in Berlin and in 2013 in the Main Gallery of the United Nations in New York . In 2008 Zizka won the competition for the appearance of the Kiel Week . In 2011, after Konstantin Grcic, he was the second design-oriented internship recipient at Villa Massimo in Rome. Since 2011 the installation Symbiosis u. a. at the Center for Art and Media Technology (ZKM) in Karlsruhe, which uses the example of Burundi to deal with the global small arms problem. 1.5 tons of weapons from the Hutu - Tutsi conflict were demilitarized under UN supervision and transported to Germany. For the 25th anniversary of German reunification in 2015, he generated “word fusion” at the Paulskirche in Frankfurt , a “language machine” controlled by a randomized algorithm that fuses typical language elements from the former GDR and West Germany into new terms.

Zizka is also a columnist on design for the Swiss balance sheet magazine . He works as a freelance curator for the Museum of Applied Art .

Zizka lives and works in Frankfurt am Main and Berlin .
