biography

After a classical vocal training - including three years in the master class of Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau at the Berlin University of the Arts - Matthias Rettner performed primarily as a concert singer in the 1990s, e.g. B. in a duo with the pianist Eric Schneider. Together they won a prize at the International Competition for Lied Art in Stuttgart in 1990 and recorded various song programs for radio stations.

In the late 1990s, Rettner turned more to interdisciplinary projects that could no longer be clearly assigned to the classic genre. In 1999 he joined the Panoptikum action theater from Berlin , a theater ensemble directed by Sigrun Fritsch and Ralf Buron, with a focus on staging in public spaces.

In the context of PAN.OPTIKUM, Rettner developed concepts for the repositioning of action theater and gave the impetus for the productions of the following years. Under his direction, the ensemble has performed at theater festivals in Santiago de Chile, Teatro a Mil, the Festival Internacional de Teatro de Caracas, the Festival Internacional de Teatro de Bogotá, and the Festival Internacional Cervantino in Mexico.

With productions for the Ruhrtriennale 2004, “Orpheus”, a commissioned production for Gerard Mortier and the German premiere of the Rome part of the Philip Glass opera “The CIVIL warS” in September 2004, he continued his model of mixing and permeating different styles and genres.

Rettner has been working with the Frankfurt concept artist and designer Peter Zizka since 2003 and provided the first presentation platform for the installation by the artist Virtual Minefield at “The CIVIL WarS”. In 2005 he received the Baden-Württemberg Culture Prize with the ensemble.
