Stefan Sagmeister
Stefan Sagmeister (born August 6, 1962 in Bregenz ) is an Austrian graphic designer and typographer . He lives and works in New York City .
life and work
Sagmeister attended the Federal Higher Education and Research Institute for Graphics, later studied graphics and design at the University of Applied Arts Vienna and with a Fulbright scholarship at the Pratt Institute in New York . At the age of 29, Sagmeister moved to Hong Kong to work for the Leo Burnett advertising agency .
In 1993 he moved back to New York and founded Sagmeister Inc., his own agency. He has lived out his passion for music with CD cover designs and packaging for numerous well-known artists, including Lou Reed , the Rolling Stones , David Byrne , Aerosmith and Pat Metheny . In 1997 and 1999 he designed posters for the AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Arts), the front page for the design magazine Print (March / April 1996) and the New York edition of the Japanese design magazine Idea .
To Peter Hall's publication about him and his work, "Made you look" designed Sagmeister design (2009).
Since June 2012 he has been running the agency together with designer Jessica Walsh under the name "Sagmeister & Walsh". For 2018 they were invited to design the Austrian contribution to the Venice Architecture Biennale .
In 2016 he produced a documentary about happiness "The Happy Film" by trying out various recommended ways to get there.
Together with Jessica Walsh, he showed an exhibition on the subject of beauty in the Vienna Museum of Applied Arts in 2018.
Awards
- Sagmeister has been nominated six times for a Grammy and won it twice. He received a Grammy for the album design of the long player “Once in a Lifetime” by Talking Heads and for “Everything That Happens Will Happen Today” . He has also received several international awards.
- In June 2008, Sagmeister received the "Klopfer" design prize awarded by students at the Cologne International School of Design .
- In 2009 Sagmeister received the Lucky Strike Designer Award endowed with 50,000 euros .
- In 2013 Sagmeister was awarded the Gold Medal of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria .
- In 2014 Sagmeister received a practical scholarship from Villa Massimo in Rome.
- In 2016 he was named Austrian Abroad of the Year .
- In 2018 he was Austrian of the year in the international success category .
