The World Federation of Austrians Abroad ( AÖWB ) is the Vienna- based global umbrella organization and represents the interests of all affiliated associations of Austrians abroad . Around 170 clubs on all continents belong to the World Federation.

organization

In 1952, the World Federation of Austrians Abroad was founded, which was also the umbrella organization. Independently of this, the Auslandsösterreicherwerk was founded a few years later , which saw its main task as a service facility for the Austrians abroad. It also published the information journal ROTWEISSROT .

In 2002, the year of the Austrians Abroad , both associations merged to form what is now the World Federation of Austrians Abroad (AÖWB) , which as the sole representative of Austrians abroad now has around 10,000 direct members. The AÖWB understands Austrians abroad to be “both Austrian passport holders and Austrians with their hearts”.

It is chaired by a presidium: the president is Gustav Chlestil , the vice-presidents are Jürgen Em and Werner Götz, all in Germany. The board members also elected for four years on September 6, 2014 are Margarete Bernava-Bambas in Italy, Juliana G. Belcsak in USA, Jürgen Bischof in Great Britain, Peter Ernst in France, Heidemarie Hirschbäck in Australia, Rudolf Neuhold and Thomas Payer in Germany as well Laszlo Schmidt in Hungary. Helga Martinelli (Switzerland) and Roland K. Pirker (Canada) were delegated to the board by umbrella organizations. The AÖWB has a general secretariat based in Vienna and receives annual subsidies from the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs in the amount of 200,000 euros. In addition, the AÖWB has a vote in the Auslandsösterreicher-Fonds (AÖF) , which distributes an annual tax budget of over 600,000 euros for needy Austrians abroad.

The association also publishes the quarterly journal ROTWEISSROT and has been in charge of the internet forum for Austrians abroad founded by Gerald Ganglbauer since 2004 . The association also presents the achievements of Austrians abroad within Austria, for example with the traveling exhibition “The 10th Federal State” or other campaigns with which it strives to maintain constant contact with the former homeland. Once a year, always in a different federal state, a meeting of Austrians abroad takes place in Austria, which is linked to the World Federation Conference or the AÖWB General Assembly and at which the award for Austrian Abroad of the Year is awarded.

Austrian Abroad of the Year

Similar to honoring Austria of the year in Germany, the AÖWB has been honoring outstanding Austrians as Austrians abroad every year since 1994 . These goods:
