Pascale Ehrenfreund (born June 24, 1960 in Vienna ) is an Austrian astrobiologist . Since August 15, 2015 she has been the chairwoman of the German Aerospace Center . This makes her the first woman to head a major German research institution.

Life

Ehrenfreund studied astronomy and biology at the University of Vienna from 1983 . She wrote her diploma thesis at the Institute for Molecular Biology of the Academy of Sciences in Salzburg in 1987 on the subject of purification and characterization of an iminopeptidase from Streptomyces plicatus . In 1990 he completed his doctorate at the University of Paris VII and the University of Vienna ( dissertation in astrophysics on the subject of Visible and spectroscopic studies of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and other carbon clusters .) Both degrees were awarded with distinction.

After completing his doctorate, Ehrenfreund went to the Leiden Observatory (Netherlands) as a Fellow of the European Space Agency (ESA ).

From 1996 to 1999 she received an APART grant from the Austrian Academy of Sciences , which enabled her to work on her habilitation thesis in astrochemistry at the University of Vienna on the topic of cosmic dust (1999).

From 2001 to 2005 Ehrenfreund was professor of astrobiology at the University of Amsterdam and the University of Leiden , where she has been visiting professor since 2006. 2005 she became Distinguished Visiting Scientist at the the California Institute of Technology is part of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena (California) ( United States ). In 2008 Ehrenfreund completed a master's degree in management and international relations. Since 2008 she has been Professor of Space Policy and International Affairs at the Space Policy Institute at George Washington University and Lead Investigator at the NASA Astrobiology Institute .

From September 2013 to 2015 Ehrenfreund was President of the Austrian Fund for the Promotion of Scientific Research (FWF). On August 15, 2015, she switched to the German Aerospace Center (DLR) as the successor to Johann-Dietrich Wörner as CEO . Christine Mannhalter took over her agenda at the FWF in August 2015 .

Ehrenfreund has been Vice President of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Universities Space Research Association (USRA), Region III, since 2015 . She has been Chair of the Committee on Space Research COSPAR, Panel on Exploration PEX and a member of the NRC Committee on Astrobiology and Planetary Science CAPS since 2010 .

In November 2017 she was appointed economic ambassador for the city of Cologne . In October 2018 she was elected President of the International Astronautical Federation (IAF).

In March 2020, Anke Kaysser-Pyzalla was elected as her successor as CEO of the German Aerospace Center from October 2020.

Services

Together with her husband, the Esa scientist Bernard Foing, Ehrenfreund discovered evidence of so-called football molecules ( fullerenes ), which consist of sixty carbon atoms , in interstellar gas clouds between the fixed stars .

As head of the German Aerospace Center, Pascale Ehrenfreund relies on synergies . In doing so, it aims to make the boundaries between the individual institutes more permeable , between basic research and product development , natural scientists and engineers , often with their own cultures and languages.
