Since 2000 she has been Professor of Molecular Diagnostics in Clinical Chemistry at the Medical University of Vienna (part of the University of Vienna until 2004 ). From 2010 she was Vice President of the Austrian Science Fund FWF , from August 2015 to August 2016 she led it as interim president.

Life

After finishing high school, Mannhalter began studying biotechnology at the University of Vienna in 1966 , which she completed in 1974 with a diploma thesis on the subject of poly- [alpha] -L-glutamic acid as a substrate for the investigation of proteolytic enzymes . From 1974 to 1977 she studied for a doctorate, and in her dissertation she deals with studies on the prothrombin complex . In October 1977 she went to the University of Southern California Medical School as a postdoctoral fellow . She then worked as a research assistant at the University of Vienna, and in 1985 she completed her habilitation in clinical chemistry. In 1990 she became an associate professor and since 2000 she has been professor of molecular diagnostics at the Medical University of Vienna.

From 2010 she acted as Vice President of the Austrian Science Fund FWF . From August 17, 2015, she led this as interim president, after the previous president Pascale Ehrenfreund took over the role of chairman of the board of the German Aerospace Center . From 2003 to 2007 she was chairwoman of the Society for Thrombosis and Hemostasis Research . She has worked as a section editor for the journal Thrombosis and Haemostasis since 2003.

On September 1, 2016, she took over the chairmanship of the Genom Austria project , a Citizen Science project of the Research Center for Molecular Medicine of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the Medical University of Vienna.

Her main research interests are the coagulation system , the diagnosis of blood diseases such as hemophilia and leukemia, and genetic factors influencing vascular diseases such as stroke or venous thrombosis . She has published over 270 original papers.
