Klement Tockner (born November 1, 1962 in Schöder , Murau district , Styria ) is an Austrian biologist , aquatic ecologist and university professor . From 2007 he was Professor of Aquatic Ecology at the Free University of Berlin and Director of the Leibniz Institute for Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB). In May 2016 he was elected President of the Austrian Science Fund FWF .

Life

Klement Tockner studied zoology and botany at the University of Vienna , where he in 1993 with a dissertation on the ecology of the river banks of the Danube in Austria (storage Altenwörth, Danube Canal and free flow path) his doctorate . From 1993 to 1994 he worked as a water management consultant in Rwanda and Uganda. He then returned to the University of Vienna as a postdoctoral fellow.

In 1996 he moved to the ETH Zurich as senior assistant , where he was appointed adjunct professor in 2005. From 1997 to 2007 he headed a research group at the Federal Institute for Water Supply, Wastewater Treatment and Water Protection (EAWAG). In 2002 he was a JSPS Fellow at Tōhoku University , and in 2004/05 he was a visiting scholar at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies in Millbrook (New York) . In 2007 he took over the management of the Leibniz Institute for Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries in Berlin and a chair for Aquatic Ecology at the Free University of Berlin.

Tockner is a member of various committees and advisory boards and advises scientific institutions and research projects. These include the Water Research Commission of the German Research Foundation (DFG), the Federal Institute for Hydrology Koblenz (BFG), the Catalan water research institute ICRA, the Greek water research institute HCMR, the WasserCluster Lunz and the national Japanese environmental research institute NIES.

In May 2016, Tockner was elected President of the Austrian Science Fund FWF for four years . He took over this role on September 1, 2016 from Interim President Christine Mannhalter . In 2017 he was elected to succeed Christine Mannhalter as CEO of the Austrian Agency for Scientific Integrity (OeAWI). In 2017 he chairs the Alliance of Austrian Science Organizations, which was founded on his initiative at the end of 2016 . In December 2018 he was prematurely appointed by the FWF Supervisory Board for a further term of office until August 2024 as President of the FWF.
