Johann-Dietrich "Jan" Wörner (born July 18, 1954 in Kassel ) is a German civil engineer , university professor and former university president of the TU Darmstadt . From 2007 to 2015 he was CEO of the German Aerospace Center (DLR). Since July 1, 2015, he has succeeded Jean-Jacques Dordain as Director General at the European Space Agency ESA .

Life

Wörner studied civil engineering at the Technical University of Berlin and the Technical University of Darmstadt (today Technical University of Darmstadt ). As part of a research stay on earthquake security , he went to Japan for a year in 1982. In 1985 he received his doctorate with a contribution to the realistic description of the component-structure interaction in earthquakes. Until 1990 Wörner worked for the engineering office König und Heunisch, Frankfurt. In 1990 he was appointed to the Technical University of Darmstadt, where he was Professor (C3) for solid construction and head of the testing and research institute until 1995 . In 1994 he founded the engineering office Wörner und Partner. From 1992 to 1994 Wörner was dean of the civil engineering department, and from 1993 also technical director of the Institute for Structural Glass Construction, Gelsenkirchen. In 1994 he was appointed test engineer for structural engineering and solid construction . 1995 followed a professorship (C4) for statics at the TH Darmstadt.

On June 28, 1995 he was elected president by the convention of the then TH Darmstadt; From July 24, 1995 to February 28, 2007, Wörner headed the university. For the TU Darmstadt he achieved a so far unique independence from the state of Hesse. Since 2006 the university in southern Hesse has been the first autonomous university in the Federal Republic of Germany with extensive freedom of self-administration.

In 2002 Wörner was elected deputy spokesman for the universities in the German Rectors' Conference (HRK), and in 2003 he became spokesman for the Working Group of Technical Universities and Universities in Germany, ARGE TU / TH. In 2003 he was a member of the “Ranking” working group of the Science Council and took over the acting representation of the professorship “Statics of Building Structures, Department of Architecture”. In 2004 Wörner was a member of the "Universities" working group of the Science Council.

From March 1, 2007 to June 30, 2015, he was Chairman of the Executive Board of the German Aerospace Center (DLR).

Since February 2011 he has been employed by the state government of Baden-Württemberg as an arbitrator for the Stuttgart 21 rail project . Wörner had previously acted as broker for the Frankfurt airport expansion.

Since July 1, 2015, Wörner has held the position of Director General of ESA, which is based in Paris.

Act

Since it was founded in 2000, Wörner has headed the Frankfurt Airport Regional Dialogue Forum , which deals with the future development of Frankfurt Airport . He is a full member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences (2002). He has been a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina (Technical Sciences Section) since 2002 , and in 2006 he was elected a member of the Senate (chairman). He is a member of the University Council of the École Centrale de Paris (2000) and the École Centrale de Lyon (2005). He is also a member of the German Academy of Engineering Sciences, German Academy of Engineering Sciences acatech, and of the Supervisory Board of Röhm GmbH. He is also a member of the advisory board of the Chinese-German University College at Tongji University Shanghai , the CHE (Center for University Development ) and President of the European network of technical universities CESAER. Wörner has been appointed to the "Energy Policy Program Project Group" (PEPP) by the Federal Government. From 2002 until his appointment as CEO of DLR, Wörner was a member of the DLR Senate. In 2007 he was elected an honorary member of CLUSTER . Also in 2007 he was elected Vice President of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers (HGF) and Deputy Chairman of the ESA Council. Since 2008, Wörner has been a member of the Technology and Innovation Council of the State of Berlin (TIR).

He has been co-editor of the concrete calendar since 2003 .

Awards

Wörner received honorary doctorates from the State University of New York (1998), the Technical University of Moldova (1999), the Technical University of Bucharest (2000), the University of St. Petersburg for Economics and Finance (2000), the École Centrale de Lyon (2003 ) and the Technical University of Mongolia (2005).

In 1988 Wörner was honored with the prize of the Association of Friends of the Technical University of Darmstadt for "excellent scientific achievements". In 2007 he received the Johann Heinrich Merck Honor from the City of Science Darmstadt. In 2007 he was awarded the Fraunhofer Medal. In 2011 he was made an honorary member of the non-profit association for the promotion of research transfer eV (GFFT).

In 2016, Wörner was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
