Jean-Jacques Dordain (born April 14, 1946 in Estrun , Département Nord ) was the General Director of the European Space Agency (ESA) from July 2003 to June 2015 .

Life

The Frenchman Dordain completed his engineering training at the École Centrale Paris in 1968. He started his career at the French aerospace research institute ONERA (Office national d'études et de recherches aérospatiales), where he mainly researched liquid propellant rocket motors and microgravity . From 1973 to 1987 he was also a professor at the École nationale supérieure de l'aéronautique et de l'espace . In 1977 he was one of the 53 European candidates for the ESA Spacelab -1 selection process, he was one of the 5 French candidates, but was not selected. From 1977 to 1993 he taught mechanical engineering at the Ecole polytechnique .

In 1982 he became head of the directorate for general physics at ONERA. During this time he also chaired a number of committees of inquiry that were supposed to clarify the frequent failures of the European Ariane rocket at the time .

His career at ESA began in 1986 when he was appointed head of the Microgravity and Space Station Utilization Department . He then became Deputy Director for Strategy, Planning and Guidelines for International Cooperation and Director for Strategy and Technical Assessment at the European Space Agency. In 2001 he was named Director of Launchers .

In July 2003 Dordain became Director General of ESA for the first time for 4 years, his term of office was extended from June 2010 to June 2015. His predecessor in this office was M. Antonio Rodotà , his successor was Johann-Dietrich Wörner .

Jean-Jacques Dordain is a member of the French Académie des Technologies and the Académie Nationale de l'Air et de l'Espace . He also serves as Vice President of the International Astronautical Federation and is Chancellor of the International Space University . In 2019 Dordain was elected to the US National Academy of Engineering .
